Linear PushPull chain – an innovative element of drive technology

Linear lifting chains are important elements in linear drive technology. They develop their true strength where other products, such as screw jacks, are eliminated due to space. Typically, in drive technology, loads are transferred by voltage or pressure. If you use lifting equipment, you can do both: pulling and pushing. A push chain can also do both – and as a chain. You’ll learn how to do it right away.

How the Grob Linear Rigid Chain works:

It consists of specially shaped, precise and mechanical chain links. The chain links are connected to each other in a continuous, shape-fitting manner. The special feature of a push chain (as opposed to a “normal” chain is: It works in both directions – it can pull and “press”).

There is a pinion gear in the push chain drive housing that engages with the intermediate chain links and moves the chain link by one link – both forward and backward. The chain itself has two loose ends. At one end, the load to be moved is attached. The other end can be actuated freely and is usually collapsed in memory. This saves a lot of space and is the main advantage of the push chain. If you were working with a “normal” screw jack, you would need much more installation space for the spindle stroke.

How a push chain works when it “pushes”

A drive element, usually an electric motor, initiates thrust on the chain links. Now the arms of each chain link press against each other and form a rigid unit. This allows them to lift or push loads.

How a push chain works when it “pulls”

It now works like a normal chain and the links can be wound in one direction and can be stored in a warehouse in a space-saving way.

How the push chain is guided

You have two options: either it works on a sliding surface or on a guide rail. The choice of guide depends on both thrust, stroke length and travel speed. A guide is necessary from a certain stroke length to avoid buckling of the push chain.

Typical applications of linear push chain drive:

  • Drive in the lifting table
  • Riding in an elevator shaft.
  • Stage platforms/platforms.
  • In the handling of tools and materials
  • In warehouse logistics.
  • When loading hardening furnaces.
  • In refrigeration systems
  • In modern construction technology.
  • In conveyor systems
  • When changing tools on metalworking presses
  • In driverless transport systems
  • For moving containers
